i've just heard on the radio that jennifer saunders has been signed up for one episode to play the first ever time lord.

WRONG!!!

i recall the colin baker story 'trial of a time lord' whereby the doctor is hauled back to gallifrey, and there are females on the time lord council - most notably linda bellingham. they were - by definition - female time lords.

not to mention the terrific Romana

I well remember Mary Tamm as Romana - Doctor Who's companion and a Time Lady - although she only stayed for one series. She was replaced by Lala Ward who went on to marry Tom baker.
oh what year did all of this happen? I want to watch the old ones!!

tom baker was the doctor from 1974 to 1981

colin baker was 1984 to 1987
But, think it through - she could pre-date all of these and appear in modern times using, well, a time machine...
Romana first appeared in ( what is known as ) the "Key to Time" season, recently released on DVD...

She regenerated into actress Lalla Ward when first Romana Mary Tamm didn't want to continue in the role.
Lalla's first story as Romana was "Destiny of the Daleks", also out on DVD...

there was also The Rani played by Kate O'mara . She appeared with Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy.:-D
well no wonder I've never seen any of them - I was born in 1987!!
Well I can remember when you could only get into the Tardis by using the key in a special way! Now anyone can just get the key and go in.
yeah but jennifer saunders can be so awful......
Maybe I Am Wrong But from the way I have Seen this story written in the newspapers I think They imply that Jennifier Saunders would actually be playing the role of The Doctor for one episode. Imagine that.:-D
As a matter of interest Lalla Ward is married to Richard Dawkins
