"it" was a big alien with fangs, a silly grin, and looking like a cross between Mr Blobby and a large carrot;
"the world" was a small rural town in Middle America; and
"conquered" meant that it made a half-hearted but unsuccessful attempt to take over the town. It did so by sending out a flock of robotic bats to inject poison into the necks of a small selection of key personnel in the town (the sherriff, the scientist, the big businessman (etc.) and their wives[sic]) in order to brainwash them into submission. It was a thinly-disguised reference to the perceived threat of Communist subversion, indoctrination, de-individualisation etc.

an Australian "horror" flick called "Bodymelt" starring Neighbours' Harold Bishop (who says the word "f**k" - worth it for that alone!). it has an inbred family & a whole host of other odd people. as the title suggests, everyones body... erm... melts. the most dreadfully bad/inavdertantly amusing film i've ever seen. Quality entertainment
Any of the Matrix films - they took themselves sooooooooo seriously but are truly awful - nothing but a string of repetitive SFX, with characterization, story and dialogue that your average afternoon soap would be ashamed to use. No wonder the acting was so dreadful!
Actually, change that - the first film was so pretentious it was funny, but the sequels were just mind-numbingly dull.
