Mr and Mrs Mumbo

There was a TV series in the early 1950s called 'Mr and Mrs Mumbo'. Does anyone remember it? Even people at the BBC can't!! It was presented by Reginald Geoffreys (spelling?) who used to draw cartoon pictures of a married couple. As he was sketching them they would come to life. However, if he were to make a blot with the ink, a naughty character called Blotto would appear and cause havoc! The programme was very entertaining in its day.

Neither the BBC press office or the National Film and Television museum can find material relating to this programme. Are you sure it was Mr and Mrs Mumbo? Come back with some more details and I'll try www.silvascreen.co.uk - was it perhaps a film?

I remember it clearly. It was one of my very favourite programs. I loved it when the blot turned into Jack Splat. I remembered it as Jack Sprat, but there is a link that mentions 'Splat'. http://www.whirligig-...saturdayspecial.htm). This is the only mention on the Internet I have found till now. I don't remember it as a Saturday program. In my mind, when I think back, I am at home around tea time after school, watching it on kids' TV. I do remember, though, that Whirligig, with the immortal Mr Turnip, alternated with another program on a fortnightly basis. Until I saw your post, I have not been able to find a single other person that even vaguely remember the program.

As I remember the show always always started with the cartoonist 'Mr Jeffreys' drawing on a sheet of paper. The characters he drew (Mr and Mrs Mumbo) would then begin to move on the paper and interact with him. At some point his drawing pen would always produce a blot which would then reform and reshape itself to form the mischievous character called Splatt. I would think that the mix of live action and animation was quite advanced for the time.

The TV programme I saw was called "Saturday Special" and was presented by Reginald Jeffryes who appeared with his cartoon characters Mr. and Mrs. Mumbo along with an ink-blot character called Splat.

Yes I remember it, and the signature tune was frm Les Patineurs Ballet Suite by Giacomo Meyerbeer.
