Hi In a Pickle. I have ordered the 1982 version of Pirates of Penzance featuring Peter Allen & Keith Michell and look forward to viewing it. Probably will keep it for Christmas week. Many thanks for the advice!!

there was also a film version, of the Broadway production I think, with Kevin Kline; I didn't think much of it myself.

Thanks Jno. I don't know much about opera - but I do know what I like. Talking as an amateur fan, the acting is secondary to the singing - so Hollywood stars don't impress. Also I like the theatre atmosphere - attractive, colorful backdrops but not 100% realistic. So a version filmed on location may not appeal to me. At the same time I realise that to film a 'live' showing in a theatre is very difficult - so I presume a version filmed in a studio with theatre type backdrops is more likely to appeal.
Then there are the singers.............so I may come back to you two again for more advice!!
