Alien 1 ZOMBIE?!

ok stop me if i'm being TOTALLY retarded but since i'm going to see AVP today me and my friends watched the whole of the Alien, and Predator series yesterday.

One think that confused me was what the HELL is that thing in Alien 1?!

The bit where the guys go into the big ship, and before face hugger scene.

It looks like a large zombie sitting in a big chair?!

I have always taken it as the giant alien being that owns the crashed ship from which the distress call/warning has been sent,  It is sitting in a chair and when they look closerly at it they see something has burst out of its rib cage.

As Rabelais says, the huge pilot ( space jockey ) of the derelict spaceship has indeed been invaded by an Alien, which has burst out of it's rib cage and laid eggs that the human crew discover.

Yes, it's a different alien but it's been there so long it's calcified - turning to stone

I always thought it was a part of an alien race that was harboring the aliens (the lower part of the ship is full of egg chambers) and perhaps defending them: the gigantic device it is sitting in appears to be a huge defence cannon thing. Point of interest: the original full size model of the space jockey was on display in a cinema complex in London but was selfishly destroyed in an arson attack.

No it could not have been harbouring the aliens since it was sending out a warning signal one can only presume to avoid it. An alien also burst out of its chest so no love lost their either. Thirdly I would say the technology we see around the eggs does not seem to fit in with the original ship.
