So far I'm enjoying the new BBC adaptation of Jane Austins novel. I haven't read the book - how true to it is this version ?

None of the versions will ever get it right as they will always focus on the love story rather than the comedy of manners and the satiric subtlety of the language.

(I'll just go add some vinegar to this chip on my shoulder).

A jane Austen fan China? She was ahead of her time. Enjoy your chip!
Of the books yes... although Emma isn't really one of my favourites... She was quite a revolutionary gal was our Jane. (And don't even get me started on the traversty that is Bridget fecking Jones... Modern day pride and prejudice my ass!)
Question Author
It's not - I never realized - my favourite jane Austin pride and prejudice. I liked the BBC adaptation of that - the six parter!
Oh yeah... That's beautiful... I love that too... I do take exception to Mr Darcy diving half clad in to a lake as that's a little bit of creative license but it made him look pretty so I didn't mind too much... ;0)
Question Author
A lot of poetic licence there but I think jane might have approved !
I suspect it'd have gotten her seal of approval! ;0)

(Mind you... Wickham in the one with Kiera... Phoar! I prefer the Mr Darcy in that too but Colin played the better character)
And next week: Was Shakespeare a boring old twat. Please bring your books and something for the sweet trolly...
Well, well... Mr Culture's arrived.... We call him that because it's what's growing on him.

(And Ben Jonson was the Rolling Stones to Shakespeares Beatles)

I liked the film of Sense and Sensibility also - (ignoring snags until he behaves and brings an apple to teacher)
I am a real nit~picker when it comes to Jane Austen.
I think it is always a mistake to try and compare any book with a TV ot film production, they will never meet the images we have in our heads.
Having said which,I am (so far) quite pleased with the new "Emma".
Only two small points.I think the actress playing Emma is a trifle too modern in her way of moving and talikng, but that's fault of the director not the actress.
I couldn't fault the dialogue (which is where many filmed versions fail) except for one character who used the expression "up front" when referring to a monetary payment.I can't think that this was a period expression.
Unless someone can disillusion me (please).

Evening mr v - I don't tend to nit pick I just relax and enjoy. I never read the book but did not like the last BBC adaptation of same and thought that emma was a very unsympathetic character. On another note did you watch criminal justice earlier ?
