The gist of Lost?

I never watched Lost but I know its about some people who crashed onto an island and some weird things happen. Can anyone give me the gist of the plot? I always assumed from a couple of discussions about the show, with a guy I worked with, that the island was a metaphor for the characters lives. I'll probably never watch the show so if anyone can just say how it all ended up and whether or not it made any sense in the end, that would be cool. Thanks.
