You've not stated whether you're viewing the BBC HD channel on Freeview or via satellite. The most likely cause of the problem was either high atmospheric pressure (which mainly affects terrestrial signals but can disrupt satellite TV) or solar activity (which affects all TV signals).

My posts here mention some of the other causes of TV signals breaking up (including, of course, a lousy aerial!):

PS: Sometimes something as simple as a taxi driver (or emergency services driver) parked outside your house, while using his radio, can cause TV signals to break up.

Thanks for your reply

If it was cable the problem was probably related to your TV but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's faulty. If your neighbour has recently placed a computer or microwave oven on the other side of the wall to your TV, interference from it could cause your picture to break up. It could even occur if he'd put his own TV there. All devices which receive radio signals (such as radios, TVs, digiboxes, PVR recorders, etc) also transmit them. In some cases one device can interfere with reception on another.
