beware anyone signing up to eharmony

an acquaintance of mine signed up to eharmony.co.uk for just one month, to see what it was like. After a month, without warning, eharmony re-subscribed my friend taking another month's fee from his account. He complained but they initially refused to refund him anything, and then only £15 which is a tiny part of the monthly fee. their argument was that my mate should have clicked off some sort of automatic re-subscribe button, but he hadn't seen it (it wasn't obvious), there was no warning, and why should he expect this if only signing up for 1 month? seems a low-down dirty trick to me.

"Except as otherwise stated in this section, you may cancel your registration or subscription to any Services at any time during the term of such registration or subscription or any renewal period by accessing the “Account Settings” page under the “My Settings” option on your membership home page, clicking on “Cancel My Subscription” link, and providing the information requested"

Sees clear to me. I assume he read the T&C before signing up?

From Section 13:

"In order to provide continuous service, eHarmony automatically renews all paid subscriptions for Services 24 hours before such subscriptions expire Such renewals are generally for the same duration as the original subscription term (for example, a 1-month subscription will renew on a monthly basis, a 3-month subscription will renew on a 3-month basis, and so on),...... In all cases, if you do not wish your account to renew automatically, please follow the directions set out under "Cancellation At Any Time With No Refund" above. "

It's standard procedure with these type of sign ups... Lovefilm the online DVD store do the same as do many others. Always read the small print...

i don't care how common this practise is, I think it's totally wrong. and when you sign up for an agency like this, the last thing you're thinking about is the small print

You should read the small print of EVERYTHING you sign up for, especially when you have to give your personal and bank details.

The first thing you should think of when signing anything is the small print - anything other is pure foolishness.

well it shouldn't be the last thing you think about! Would you just sign anything without knowing what you had agreed to?

I never sign up to anything where you have to remember to cancel after the trial, just in case I forget :-/
Common sense I'd call it.

chelle, I don't worry about it, I cancel within the week and I've had my free trials without problem.
