The other day, I happened to mention that I was faced with Sophie's Choice over something (Can't actually remember what it was, so it obviously wasn't that dramatic!) Anyhoo, I was met with blank stares from my 20 something of age work colleagues, and had to explain the comment.

I've just now You Tubed that particular scene ,and I'd almost forgotten how heartbreaking it was. How brilliantly was it done by Meryl? And it once again brought a lump to my throat.

yes, I haven't seen it for a long time, what was her reason , she does explain it I know.
i am about your age and have never seen the film. In the clip is she chosing to save the girl or send the girl to her death - they don't specify what "over there" means

If memory serves me right dotty, it was because her son was older and in better health, so she thought he'd stand a better chance of surviving.

She's to choose which one lives and which one doesn't Bednobs. She chose to save her son.
I remember reading the book when my son was little; I could hardly see the words for tears.
Exactly - I was faced with a dilemna and remarked to a few colleagues about it being "Sophies Choice" - cue blank faces and then being asked why I needed Sophie*** to decide for me. It took a while but I finally managed to get them to see what I was on about

Wouldnt want to even try and explain - Hobsons choice to them
***- Sophie being one of my work colleagues
