'Baby on board'

Can anyone verify that this sign was originally meant to alert rescuers at an accident site that there was a baby in the vehicle?

Those signs certainly swing impressively as their vehicle whips around a roundabout almost on two wheels or disappears into the distance way over the speed limit! Most alarming of all is that you often catch sight of a baby in it's carrier strapped into the front seat while Mummy risks it's very life and limb!

It was indeed. After an accident in the USA one car went into a ditch with lots of undergrowth. the female driver was rescued unconscious from the vehicle. when she came to in hospital she asked if her baby was OK. When questioned she explained that the baby was in a carry cot on the back seat. The rescue service hurried back to the car and found the baby covered in debris but otherwise OK. A close call! The mother came up with the idea of the sign, but it should not be used when there is no child in the vehicle.

I can't stand these signs.
They have nothing to do with safety and everything to do wth "ooh, look at me, aren't I clever, I've produced a child".
I couldn't give a tinker's cuss that you've managed to produce a baby - producing a baby is not a 'miracle', it is simply a chemical reaction.
I can't stand the derivatives either - Little Monkey on Board, Little Princess on Board - but I have a very special loathing for girls who have "Babe on Board" signs in their cars, if nothing else because they can always be described as many things, but 'Babe' would never be one of them.

I agree with flip_flop about the babe sign,& many of the others on display. I would love to see a sign that could be shown in the rear window by means of a switch which would tell the clown trying to climb up my exhaust pipe that this is a 30,40,50 zone whichever I am driving in & who resents the fact that I am driving at the correct speed.
Driving along an urban dual carriageway, 50mph limit, everyone behaving nicely when Jeepy thing in front wobbles and passenger door opens. Car wobbles even more and I can see driver leaning across to close door. Wobbling stops. I gingerly pass as Jeep has now slowed to about 40mph. As I approach door flies open again, wobble, driver stretches across and door closes. I pass looking carefully.
There is a kid on the passenger seat in gales of laughter as he opens the door again. Dad is shouting and very distracted, not looking ahead, and I am past before he leans over again to close door. In my mirror I see him swerving rather than wobbling this time, Other drivers are giving him a wide berth.
Children are a danger to everyone around on the road. Back to topic, yes the signs were originally for information in case of accident.
