So very saddened to read that Graham Thorpe ended his own life.   His family has spoken of their sorrow seeing how difficult his life had become.

Not the first I'm afraid and won't be the last.

I've personally known two people who have done the same thing.

It's hard to comprehend how some people find life so impossible.

Most can cope with life, some can't. Sad but true.

Sad indeed, though I think not entirely unexpected news.

It is extremely sad. Poor man and poor people left behind.

Sad news indeed, great batsman in his time!

I know he suffered with depression and alcohol dependency and obviously it became too much.

RIP and thank you for your service to English cricket!

Very sad indeed. You never know what someone is going through.

The worst thing is that the doer thinks their family will be better off without him/her. Of course they won't, but the doer can't see that at the time.

I don't think that anybody can understand why people kill themselves unless they have been in the same position.

😪

This is so tragic.....what a sorry end. Well done to the family in being so brave to talk about it.

It is, until you experience it.

When you reach a depth of despair where the prospect of living for another ten seconds is simply more than you can bear, death looks like a very attractive alternative.

It's not killing yourself, it's killing the pain, but sadly, in order to achieve the second, you have to achieve the first.

Terribly sad.  Stood in front of a train apparently. RIP

That's killing the pain, once and for all.

It's the reason why some suicides die violently, one last grasp of the control they have lost, to such devastating effect.

Did he Paul? That's very unfair on train drivers etc, some have been scarred or even unable to carry on working after experiencing that. Yes I know people are so out of it with depression that they don't think of the consequences. Still.

Still what?

As you point out, a train line suicide does not think of the consequences, they are way beyond that sort of rational reasoning.

So 'fairness' doesn't really enter the situation - neither does the aftermath of the action.

All that matters is finding peace, and a sure and certain way to get it.

I have no time whatsoever for people that top themselves by train.

Many years ago now but a close friend had a BiL who had three jumpers on the tube.  He had to stop driving after the third one, he described what its like - its horrific and you cant swerve, stop or do anything just wait for the thump and splatter.  Often in the tube they catch the hook thing and dont die immediately.  The driver is expected to wait until the specialist team they have arrives and scrapes up the mess.

You wouldn't have given that 'so correct' answer andy if you had a train driver in the family.

I knew a train driver who never got over a chap throwing himself in front of a train.  He had a breakdown and had to leave his job. It's terribly sad all round.

I'm with TTT. If you're going to top yourself, why do it in a manner that may put others at risk of injury (i.e. jumping off motorway bridges) or mental scarring.

I had a cousin who succeeded in ending his life at the 3rd attempt. He took himself off to a disused railway shed, made a noose from some nearby twine, also put twine around his wrists and stepped through his arms so that hos hands were behind him. Then he kicked away whatever it was he was using as a stand.

Unfortunately for him, death didn't come as quick as he hoped because the twine snapped and he fell to the floor where he slowly choked to death.

Even in his mental state, he took himself somewhere he knew he would not be disturbed, nor would he put others at risk by doing what he did.
