These were elections for governors rather than Senators. Not clear they mean that much. You have to wait for the midterm elections next year, really, to see which way the US public is going on Trump -- and even that may not be a very good signal, as the Democrats have something like 27 of the 33 seats up for grabs already.
To be honest, I'm not sure who was expected to win.
But I would have been claiming a great victory for Trump had the Republicans won.
So enjoy this little victory (while you can, ;))
Headlines in this morning's Telegraph;
'Unpopular? Yes, but Trump's base hasn't fractured enough to rule out a second term'.
So, when it comes to which paper you read, Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice.

mikey: "I continue to be amazed by the enthusiastic support that you, and others, still give to this truly awful man. " - snap, with Corbyn, at least Trump supports his own country, Corbyn and co support all manner of terrorist groups against us, yet mikey et al would be delighted to give him the keys for no 10! now how "amazing" is that?
TTT...Corbyn will enter Number Ten, if and when he gets more votes than whoever is leading the Tory Party at the time....something that seems to be alien to Trump !
