I suspect that some real life gangsters hammed themselves up to give themselves a big presence so the overacting is deliberately real.

For my money this is easily, by some considerable distance, the best think that has been on TV for years. The last TV series I enjoyed as much as this was the first two series of Auf Wiedersehn.
It is just superb.
Tom Hardy was only on-screen for 10 minutes last week and completely stole the show. Tommy to Alfie "morning Alfie" Alfie to Tommy "yer it is so f$%^&ng where is everybody" Brilliant.
And I love the way its a period piece but with contemporary music.
The first 10 minutes of the opening episode of this series left me breathless.
Just superb superb television.
In my opinion PB justifies the costs of the licence fee alone.
