LCD TV Screen

My two-year-old JVC 26" LCD television has recently developed 'smears' across the screen. They look like dirt smudges which begin at the top right-hand corner of the screen and are spreading across the screen. They have a pinkish tinge. Is anybody able to tell me: a) what this smearing is, b) can it be 'fixed', and c) what sort of price are we talking about?

Having just purchased a new one (today!) I need to know whether it would be 'cost effective' to have the old one repaired if this is possible.

a) Exposure to a magnetic source can result in smearing near the edges of the screen. Unshielded speakers or simply switching a vacuum cleaner off near a TV when it's on can create a magnetic field. Sometimes moving the TV when switched on will cause the smearing to appear.
b) Switch the TV off and remove the plug from the mains. After thirty minutes, switch the TV back on. If the TV still has smearing, leave the TV unplugged from the mains overnight. As a last resort talk to you local JVC dealer and inquire about getting a firmware upgrade.
c) Without warranty, prices for firmware upgrades will vary from dealer to dealer.
