Watched this on Friday night, quite enjoyable. Did the Chief Inspector, Tom Barabus I think he was called, used to work for the Channel Islands Police. Both he and his Sergeant looked very familiar, was he once in the Fire Service, whatever their background they did an excellent job in solving a very complicated case.

You're right about the Chief Inspector. When he was on Jersey, he had to call himself Bergerac, which is of course French for Barabus.

His explanation for his transfer is that shortly after the 1980s documentary series showing his detective skills came to an end, the crime rate on the island mysteriously plummeted, having previously been as high as one major crime per week for 13 weeks and the occasional Christmas special.

However, there is a rumour that the real reason is that during the 90s he became so chubby that Jersey was in danger of sinking under the weight, so he was transferred to a mainland sturdy enough to support both him and John Prescott.

Went to sleep and missed about an hour, what happened and who was the murderer?

The body in the tunnel was that of Tom the tramps father whom he murdered many years before, for abusing his mother. Barnaby took pity on him and the matter was quietly dropped, as the present day murders became more urgent to solve. Timothy Webster turned out to the killer of his friends, who were having affairs with his mother, before finally killing her as well.
