Hi all,
Does anyone out there remember what the game show was called that was on BBC2 early evening some years ago where a panel had to guess what old odd looking antique objects were used for? Also who hosted the program?

Definitely not Going For A Song! I think you mean It's Patently Obvious from the late 70s. Presenters: Ian McNaught-Davies then Julian Pettifer.

Going for a Song


Going for a Song was an antiques quiz show broadcast by the BBC from 1965-1977. It was a forerunner of the Antiques Roadshow. The original television series was hosted by presenter Max Robertson, with Arthur Negus appearing as the resident expert and antique valuer. The programmes were recorded before a studio audience.

Robertson would introduce an antique to a panel of experts who would examine the object and give its date and value. Negus would then present its actual age and worth. Revivals of the programme were made in the 1990s, hosted firstly by Michael Parkinson[1] (1995-1999), and in 1997, by Anne Robinson,[2] with antiques expert Eric Knowles in the Negus role.

Well, correct me if I am wrong but Going For A Song was not about guessing what objects were FOR.

I was just about to shoot quizmonkey down in flames but then a little bell sounded in my head.

Going for a Song was the programme where the panel had to put a price on the antiques.

There WAS a completely different programme where two teams (one expert and one civvie on each team I think) had to identify unusual antique objects.
I can't remember the name of this programme though.

I think Quizmonkey is right. Definately NOT Going For A song. I think the programme referred to had Eric Knowles (and Judith Miller?) in it and the object was to guess what the item was used for and not its value. But there again it was a long time ago, and the old grey cells are diminishing!
