Don't know about Matthew, but when I was little Sooty was operated by his father Harry Corbett. Incidentally that is why the actor in Steptoe and Son was called Harry H. Corbett, as apparently Equity do not allow two members to have the same name. Similarly the actor who plays David Platt in Corrie is called Jack P. Shepherd, to distinguish him from Jack Shepherd.

That's interesting Mike, I often wondered why Harry H Corbett was so named, assuming it to be just for effect. It of course explains Jack P Shepherd as you mention. We live and learn!
Dont know why but always eemed to like sweep better. Was the only person the other night in quiz to know the name of the snake in sooty,, ramsbottom
I love Sooty. I would still watch if he were on!! Much better than the X factor!!
You're welcome. Mine of useless information me. Think I might have misspelt the surname though, might be Shepard, but can't be bothered to check.
Sweep was adorable and so funny. Yes, I think I liked him better than Sooty, naughty little dog.

Does anybody remember Prudence Kitten by the way. I am really showing my age here!!
But what's to distinguish David Platt on Corrie from David Platt the footballer who scored that last minute goal against Belgium in Italia 90?
I'm sure Matthew still likes to keep his hand in....
Lottie, I remember Prudence, I think we are near enough the same age :0) xx
David Platt the footballer is probably not a member of Equity, the actors' union (though some of them are bloody good actors!)
1947 Yoga!! x
LOL Mike.

... and David Platt the Corrie character is certainly not a member of Equity - although Jack P. Shepherd is!

Always struck me as odd that they'd name a character after a famous footballer ... not that I watch Corrie ... but on looking now at the character's Wikipedia page, I see he was "born" in 1990 to Martin and Gail Platt so maybe that explains it ...
Three years older than me Lofty
:o) Chrissa. You are just a youngster then!!
1946 Lottie!! :0(
Matthew retired from Sooty around 1997, and by 2003 Sooty was sold to HIT Entertainment...

On the subject of childhood puppets, anyone remember Lenny the Lion, with Terry Hall?
