I have a car which I am not going to be using for a while. It is taxed up until the end of December 2011 and insured until April 2012. Is it any good applying for a refund on the tax and insurance (my car is old 1997- cannot see it being stolen) or would it be better just to leave it. Also I want to know whether it would be worth my while financially. Thanks to all who give me answers!

You'd get a 4 month refund on your car tax so you can work out how much a third is.
You'd need to ask the insurance company about the refund, every company has different cancellation penalties.
You MUST get the vehicle SORN'd before doing so.

And you cannot have it parked on the road or in any other public place while it is SORN.
You can only get whole months refunded on the tax, so do it before Aug 31st.
Get the refund and don't forge SORN which is renewable every year and you don't get a reminder but will get fined if it isn't renewed!!
Don't even cars not in use now have to be insured?
I doubt it. Who are you going to hit while it is parked on your drive ?
"you don't get a reminder but will get fined"

This is typical of how the citizen is treated by the authorities these days. Authorities are not there to improve your lot, as one might expect, they are clearly there to find ways to make your life worse in any way they can think of. Any they do so using the tax money they've demanded from you.
I'm an adult, I don't need a nanny state to remind me to renew anything.
Postdog...that's what my OH said last night. I was going to ask about it today...
Bit dramatic old-geezer...considering most of us don't seem have much problems with insurance companies.
All cars need to be insured if they are on a public road, if they are stored on private land then they need to be sorn'd.
You DO get a reminder to renew your SORN every year.
... and a time limit .. beyond which you are likely to get a fine .. very likely in fact.
