I can't find any reference in the handbook to a particular dashboard warning light. The symbol illuminated looks like a steaming cup of tea...what does it mean? It's a late 2010 E class [petrol]. It's showing on a cold engine so I'm sure it isn't a overheating warning light.

What stupid thing will car makers think up next!

This is what it means................

Occupant Safety

Mercedes-Benz has long been known for its safety features, and the Coupe will only add to that reputation. In addition to ABS and ESP stability control, the car boasts nine supplemental restraints including two-stage front air bags, a knee air bag for the driver and pelvic air bags which work together with curtain and side air bags to provide extra protection for front occupants in dangerous side-impact collisions.

Also standard is an "ATTENTION ASSIST" system that can alert the driver to the first signs of drowsiness, a factor that causes more than 100,000 accidents a year in the U.S.A steering sensor is coupled to smart software that uses 70 parameters to establish a unique driver profile during the first 20 minutes of driving. Between 50 and 112 mph, the system identifies the erratic steering corrections drivers make as they begin to get drowsy and triggers an audible warning and a "Time for a Rest?" message with a coffee cup icon in the instrument cluster.

You need to aquire a drivers handbook in case you fall asleep!

Thank you mazie and Toureman. I must admit that it made me laugh when I first spotted this symbol on the dashboard. Frankly, I find all the latest technologies more of a distraction now, particularly when I jump into a car that has been set up by a previous driver, with all sorts of lights showing what has been switched on or off, what mode it's in, etc. I can't help wondering whether more accidents are caused than are prevented by so many gadgets and gimmicks in cars now.
I agree with you manta, you have to have a good read of the drivers handbook to find all the unnecessary complexity of cars now!
