Watching "The Great Train Robbery" last night I nearly cried to see Jim Broadbent's (DCS Tommy Butler's) car, It was exactly the car I had in the mid-sixties; a black 2.4 Mark 1 Jaguar, there were lots of shots inside too and it was a dead-ringer, all red leather and walnut with that gorgeous fascia for instruments, in fact I began to wonder if it wasn't mine. I couldn't quite see the steering wheel, mine had a feature unheard of today; 'overdrive', a short stalk under the steering wheel which when you flicked it as you were bowling along in top, it gave you an extra higher gear. If only I had it now.
Does anyone feel similarly nostalgic for a car they once owned?

Yep, 1962 I had an E type jag.
You should have a look at a Jag X-type, obviously a more modern car but very reminiscent of the Mk1 & 2.
I have an X-type estate and I love it.

Why didn't it just have a normal additional gear ?
Yes, not in the same league but I miss my Peugeot, Jacques, lovely car

//Why didn't it just have a normal additional gear ?// The idea was that you could change quickly without using the clutch like the kick-down on an automatic today, it was useful to give you some extra torque for overtaking and gave fuel economy in top, exactly how it worked in the box I don't know, maybe someone can enlighten us?

I had one of the last MGBs (soft top) four speed box with overdrive on 3rd and 4th, switch on top of gear stick;

There seems to be nothing you can't find on wikipedia!
The one I would like back would be my 1970 Ford Capri 3000 GT XLR, loved that car.
But not to drive in the wet Tony?
To right Zac, had many a spin in it.
Even the last early 80s 2.8 capris were tail happy Tony. Typical ford, all image and no substance.
Have you seen how much money a good Mk1 3 litre Capri's fetch these days.
I had A Riley Elf a while ago....I loved that car....Jessica I called it
No, go on. My uncle had a bright orange 3000 GT with a black vinyl roof in 1973.
I remember that colour on them, Zac. Mine was metalic Jade Green with a Black vinyl roof Mk2 2 litre Ghia again mettalic Jade Green with a Black vinyl roof, MK3 Black 3 litre Ghia.

My first car was a Riley Elf flump, Damask Red with a sort of Cream roof.
My uncle worked for Ford - He had the first Capri one off the production line in Orange. He did nearly have an accident in it once though..probably the tail.
I have a photo from inside the production line (but not for a capri launch)
Car is completely wrapped in what looks like brown paper with senior execs and a few in white coats stood around it...a couple smoking cigars!
I'd love to see a black Hillman Hunter with red seating.
I remember going on holiday from Leeds to Newquay in my mates Mk 4 1.6L. Jeez, that was a long journey.
I loved my old 3L Granada Ghia.
What engine did your uncles Capri have, Coke Tulip ?.
Was that a MK1 granny, horseshoes ?.
