Just brought a car that is SORN. Its on a drive in Bournemouth and need to get it back to Southampton. Need to do this tommorrow. How do I undeclare it SORN? Do I just buy a new tax disc and automatically does this?

Any SORN is automatically cancelled at the moment the registered keeper changes. So, at the moment, you're technically breaking the law because you're the registered keeper of a vehicle which is neither taxed nor the subject of a SORN. Simply buying a tax disc will remedy the situation.

Its currently SORN by the prev owner and still on their drive. I have filled the log book out for them to send off. And I have the new keeper supplement. If I take this to the PO with MOT cert can I get the Tax disc? I won't have any insurance docs as they have not been sent to me yet!
What can i do?

No you can't tax it without the insurance certificate.

The only way you could move it legally on Thursday is on the back of a trailer, unless you can collect the insurance certificate yourself and tax it.

i thought the PO had the same data base as DVLC, as long as its insured and the ins.co. have done there bit it showns as being insured and they dont need to see the certificate...same principal as taxing on-line...

I haven't taxed at the PO for a while, but last time I did there was no sign of a computer terminal at the desk. Certainly the reminder forms still tell you to take the certificates with you.

Even if Chas is correct, I think it takes a few days for new insuance policies to hit the database.

not done it on line yet then Panicbutton ?..just need the reminder , and credit card, they know wether its insured and MOTd...2 mins tapping buttons and in the post within a few days...saves so much hassle..not sure the post offices are to keen though

That's why I wrote 'I haven't taxed at the PO for a while'

I found the Post Office was a hassle, with the queues and counter clerks who had differing views on when the insurance certificate needed to be valid for. I will always do it on line now.

However I don't think it is an option for someone buying a second hand car and wanting it taxed quickly.
