Can anyone give me a definite, simple answer to my following dilemma. I want to buy a Vauxhall Astra Estate, Design model.
Would petrol be a better buy than a diesel?
The MPG for the 1.6 petrol is 44
The MPG for the 1.7 diesel is 56

There are approx 5 litres to a gallon.

if petrol was 1.19 it would cost 13.5p a mile

If Diesel was 1,26 it would cost 11.25 a mile

Sum take the cost i.e 1.19 (per litre)*5 =5.95 per gallon
divide 5.95/44 (mileage) = 13.5

5 litres is actualy 1.0998 gallons.

Hope this helps

haha! No, not really!
am so blinded by figures and different facts right now.
is diesel better than petrol then in this case?
In my example yes however the greater the difference between petrol and diesl the cheaper the petrol becomes.

But yes over the life of the car much cheaper.
you have to take the car price into consideration - petrol against diesel, as diesel cars usually cost more and it can take some time to get your money back,it all depends on the mileage you do, the higher the mies the more the saving
