Ford Escort problem

I have an R reg ford Escort 1.6LX and have had it for approx 6months. Today it has started juddering and losing power when changing from 1st > 2nd gear. At times it seems as if it is going to stop altogether. It picks up again but doesn't seem right. Once in the gear and juddered for a few seconds if I leave my foot on the accelerator it pulls away again all of a sudden as if it has remembered what it should be doing. I know this sounds stupid, but didn't know how else to explain.

Obviously I am going to book it into the garage to get it checked out, but was wondering whether anyone could suggest what this could be so the shock on repair cost is softened a bit beforehand.

Thanks

My god you were quick to reply.

It seems to happen in 1st > 2nd mainly, but has done it in 3rd.

Once I have built up my steady speed it seems to coast along fine
faulty injector or condenser (in the distributor) or a faulty lead/spark plug

basically anywhere in the HT system
of course there could be other causes, but these are the most likely ;D
I've got an R reg escort and mine did the same, apparently the brake was sticking, causing the juddering, and when it unstuck it drove fine.
The symptoms for mine were exactly as you describe, apparently it's the brake caliper sticking.
I had it front passenger side and it had worn th brake discs so they needed replacing, then a few months later got it in the drivers side and the discs weren't damaged so he just freed it off a little and now it's fine.
Actually i sold it today so no more :P

My clutch was almost dead!

It's likely it's something totally different but your description sounds the same!
Had this myself on my 1.6 si. Take spark plug cover off and check for water around the spark plugs
