Get a temporary tax disc to drive car when buying it?

Do you know how (and if it's possible) to get a temporary tax disc for a car we want to buy? We want to take it for a drive, and get it round the corner to a mecanic who could give it a check, but there is no tax disc on it, and at present the only person insured to drive it is the car dealer who has a special 'tax plate' or something like that.
He's ok with us taking it for a short drive with him in it, but doesn't have time to stand there while the car is being checked by our mecanic, as there are only 2 people working at the dealer's.

Take the car for a test drive with the dealer but why can't the mechanic come to the dealers to look at the car?
AA & RAC also have a car checking service & will come to where the car is - it might be worth thinking about if your mechanic can't do it.

What you want is not available.

Motor traders have "trade plates" which enable them to drive untaxed vehicles in the course of their business and this is probably what the dealer is referring to when offering to take you for a test drive.

If the dealer resists allowing your mechanic or the AA or RAC to check the car at his premises then don't buy it. Trade plates are personal to the dealer and he must be in the vehicle whilst being driven.

Hi Sonia, get the dealer to check the car ask them to write down ALL the items that have been checked this will be your (ACE) card if anything goes wrong with the car once you have bought it.

no chance of temp tax disc.think about it you would have to insure the car and have mot to tax it.just pay for an AA check.
