Manual heater controls. No heat....any quick fixes or do repairs need 2nd mortgages?

Check water level, check heater hoses, is fan belt tight? how old is car? if an old Jag had the cables slipped the screw at the rear of the dash? is the a kink in the heater pipes? Air lock due to water been dropped out of the system to add antifreeze, last, thermostat.

Had it new on 2000! Will check as you advise. The engine continues to run (cooling down?) after its switched off.
