Automatic transmission level checkiing.

Hello, Should automatic transmission fluid level be checked with engine running or stopped? I reckon stopped, but my son heard from a workmate that engine should be running. Also, what's the amount of fluid indicated between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick - Rover 25? Handbook indicates whole transmission takes 4 litres. Any help appreciated. Cheers, Andy

Not an authority on this, but last week I took my Mondeo auto to a gearbox specialist because the fluid level was showing low on the dipstick ( switched off) and they told me that the level should always be checked with the engine running. With the engine running the level was fine.

It's almost always checked with the engine at tick over apart from a few rare occasions when the manual will say otherwise.

According to my Vauxhall Omega Haynes Manual the transmission fluid level should be checked with the engine warm and at tickover.
