If he can't drive yet then I think you can. As soon as he passes his test you'll have to swap him to the main driver or you'll be fronting and that's illegal.

thanks ,just i think paying 2,320 for both of us for a year is mad so thought that hes better and cheaper being second driver if insurance company will let us.as the car is only costing him 1,500.

lol yip alot of dosh!!!! hes only turned 17 and got himself a good job but dont want him skint every mth over insurance
Check it out first though.
i think the main driver has to be the registered keeper. So if you get the log book in your name and drive it primarily and then teach him as a learner that would be ok. Then chage the log book back to him

Doing it the other way may be seen as fronting.
The principal driver of the car (irrespective of whether he's the registered keeper or not) must be the person whose name the insurance policy is taken out in. If someone else claims, falsely, that they're the main driver, they are committing a criminal offence known as 'fronting' (or, more formally, as 'fraud by false representation'). The maximum penalty is 10 years imprisonment (plus an unlimited fine):

However it's perfectly legal for a young driver to add an older, more experienced driver (such as a parent), onto his own policy as a 'named driver. That often results in a substantial reduction in the premium.
