What is the maximum speed gritter lorries should travel and spray at? just curious.

There is no 'legal' max. The drivers are advised what speed to grit at for the circumstances and the type of truck. The big 8 wheelers on the motorways will grit at around 50mph, whereas the small 4 wheelers you have round town and countryside wil be doing around 20 - 30 mph. When I used to run to Austria they used to use 3 snowploughs to clear a motorway. All had a plough on the front and an extra blade half way down the right side. First one would be in lane 2, second behind and in lane 1, third behind and on the hard shoulder. They used to travel at over 50 and god help you if you held them up!! (and yes, it wasn't always easy to get out of the way!)
