Hi, i own a 2009 Yamaha R6 which i purchased last year as an ex demo. Now there is one thing i am unsure about, which is what fuel do i put in it? I have been putting in normal unleaded petrol since i bought it. The bike is running fine but do i need to upgrade to premium to avoid any engine damage? Can someone please help, thanks!

Bear in mind that our regular unleaded is a lot higher octane rating than most countries premium (most places in America don't sell any higher than 93octane) and as the R6 is sold in the USA they would not be able to put higher octane petrol in the bike. so our regular should be fine.

If you start to hear the engine pinking (pre-detonation) consider higher octane (more likely in really hot weather than cold) but otherwise stick to normal.

Thanks, it sounds like i have never owned a bike before. I have actually owned quite a few but the R6 is the most high performance one yet which is why i am panicing!! My manual says premium however due to the price i chose to put in normal unleaded @ £1.37 per litre in instead.
we have a yamaha fazer 1000 and have always put regular unleaded in with no trouble at all.

Excellent, nice to hear from another yamaha rider who uses normal unleaded. Is it worth checking the octane amount before filling up? I do use a number of garages an to be honest i just pick up the green pump and fill up!!
thats pretty much what we do too.
why dont you ask on one of the R6 / yamaha owners clubs, like this one http://www.yamahaclub.com/forums/
after a little more looking it seems the 1st generation (1999-2002) is 87 octane the second generation (2003 on) requires 91/93 octane. so our regular 95 should be fine.

I will have a look now, cheers!

Ok chuckfickens, just checked manual again and altough it says premium unleaded it also says no lower than octane 95, im covered then!! Just don't want to pay nearly £1.50 per litre when im already paying £1.37 for ordinary unleaded.

Thanks alot peeps!!!!!!
I have an R1 standard unleaded is fine, use premium if you want. Performance improvement is negligible.
oh and don't do what I did once and fill it up with diesel! doh!

Cheers R1 geezer! If you are putting normal unleaded in your R1 then that totally answers my question! Im gutted that you put diesel in though, did you start it?
