I wanted to buy a private plate that came out this year, March 11, and I know I can't put it on my 2008 car but when will it be legal to do so, am I right in thinking it will be 3 years before I can use it ?

If its a 2011 plate (ie XX11 XXX) then you can put it on any car that is younger than the plate.

you cannot put it on your 2008 plate car in 3 years time. you cannot put a plate on a car that makes the car appear younger than it actually is

On the website it states "You may wish to buy the registration mark and hold it for later use (to avoid disappointment) or keep searching " just wanted to know when later use would be
later use will be when you have a 2011 car or one newer.
redcrx I think you may be wrong - any number plate can be fitted, regaudless of age to any car

Thanks redcrx, got it now, just could'nt understand at first, I am getting on a bit.
no you cannot Tony.

"When assigning a personalised registration number to a vehicle you cannot make the vehicle look newer than it actually is. For example, you cannot put a ‘Y’ registration number onto a ‘T’ registered vehicle, but you could choose any prefix range from ‘A’ to ‘T’."
a little out of date but same applies, you cannot put a 11 plate on a 2008 car.

redcrx - think that applies to selling a older car for a newer one - e.g. when a facelift comes on a production model. DVLA docs will say age of vehicle. You can plate any vehicle with any plate - if you follow the rules
As per the DirectGov link...

When assigning a personalised registration number to a vehicle you cannot make the vehicle look newer than it actually is. For example, you cannot put a ‘Y’ registration number onto a ‘T’ registered vehicle, but you could choose any prefix range from ‘A’ to ‘T’.
perhaps you can give us a link then, Tony?
red
without all the notes

tells you how to do it
sorry Tony, i cannot see anything other than the DVLA auction site there.
As per the Schedule of The Sale of Registration Marks Regulations 1995 (amended 2008)

Conditions for the assignment of a registration mark

10.—(1) A registration mark may not be assigned to a vehicle in pursuance of a relevant right unless the conditions specified in sub-paragraph (2) are satisfied.

(2) The conditions are that—

(a) where the relevant right is a right to assign a registration mark to a vehicle registered in the G.B. records, the assignment of the mark to the vehicle will not indicate that the vehicle was first used more recently than is the case

red - that was the point DVLA will not issue any plates that they think will be worth money - they sell them instead.
Will tke you through the nuts and bolts of tranfering plates if you want - can be done
tony, i think red is right,
i really dont think you can put a newer plate on an older car.

i have a plate held on retention. its an M reg.
i could put it on any car After an M reg, but not on a car older, like a K etc.
Tony, It is illegal to put a registration plate on a vehicle that makes the vehicle appear newer than is stated on the V5C (Date First Registered).

There are no loop holes that you van use and all the links that red and a few others have put up for you to look at state it quite clearly.

You should admit defeat graciously and find a new topic to argue over.
That's how I thought it worked Looobylooo!
yep! lol ^^
tony, i think youve got confused with the question and answers. No-ones denying that you cant transfer plates from car to car or buy a plate for a car. The question was about what REG you can put on a car. I think that we all know that a special plate has to be purchased (either by buying the plate or by buying the car the plate is on)
for example, there is no way that i can put a reg of ET52 XXX on my 1960s car
if however, it's a vanity plate with no year indicators on (like HOT 5TUD) you can put it on any car
