Rear Lights

Is there a limit as to how many rear lights may be displayed on a vehicle.
I was on the M1 last night and came up to the rear of an AA recovery pickup. It was displaying 14 rear facing lights and was blinding my vision. Is this number of lights legal or even needed.

There is no legal limit to the number, but they must be red and and no more than 5 watts each.

Their definitely not needed Graham except when the recovery truck is stationary on the hard shoulder where idiot drivers could run into him.

But their not illegal unless he had rear fog lights on when it's not foggy.

Thanks guys. They were certainly red but seemed brighter than 5 watts. Could they have been LED bulbs. 5 watts of LED would be a lot brighter than 5 watts of normal bulbs.

Hmm, could be. I know its 5W on an incandescent bulb...don't know if there is a regulation for LED's.

I appreciate your discomfort however hundreds of accidents happen on motorways every year because people hit cars on the hard shoulder. Given that this person probably stops on the hard shoulder a lot maybe he thinks it necessary. At least you saw him.
