pollen filter ford fusion

hi just put pollen filter in my ford fusion as was getting smell in the car ,was advised to change it ,only that when i stripped it down there was no filter in to change,so i put a new one in.only now the smell is more stronger ? any one had this problem ,thinking of doing a full service on it now to see if that helps,its a 2006 diesel cheers
