A question further down reminded me....

I've had a service on my car and the toyota garage pointed out a (barely noticeable)  flat spot on my alloy wheel (from going down a pot hole ages ago). At the time I went to Kwikfit and got the tracking sorted out so thought it was fine. But toyota are telling me I need a new wheel otherwise it will fail an MOT when it needs one. Is this true?

Swap it for the spare and keep quiet. You know you'll only use it if you get a puncture. That should eliminate the cost of a new wheel.

Thanks, but the spare is only a space saver so it will be a bit of a give away!
A friend of mine hit a kerbstone left in the middle of the road in his Focus. The Ford dealership said it was fine but when it went for its MOT, they told him he'd need a new one to get it through. Wasn't cheap but you knew that already! The Toyota guys are probably telling the truth, but I don't know the ins and outs of MOTs. Where's Kebabmeister when you need him? (Assuming it's a him!)
PS, I was talking about alloy wheels!

The mechanic's guide dog at my local MOT place is usually quite lenient and passes most things.. i.e. if your car stops before it hits the wall, your brakes are ok...
kebabmeister might not be around but i'm fresh off the plane (7am) this morning. a quick look at the evidence would suggest the rim is ok. two things should be obvious pointers to problems, was the tyre damaged and if not, has it lost any air since?
