Instructors now just get you past the test, when I learnt back in 1971 my instructor took me on a dual carriage way , built to motorway standards but nor designated as a motorway.
He told me I had to do 70 mph all the way , overtake slower traffic correctly and use the correct lane. This should be compusory before you are allowed to drive on a motorway. The present situation is stupid, you have never driven outside a town centre and never been over 30 mph but as soon as you have the pass certificate you can do 70 straight down the M25 !
