Parking ticket valid?

Last Sunday morning at 10am, I parked in a residential area on a bit of road next to 4 other cars. The road had no yellow lines so I thought I was ok. I got a ticket and then noticed a (tiny) 'no waiting' sign. I was going to stump up the £30 but I've been told I should appeal because the sign must be accompanied by a single yellow line for the fine to be valid. Any thoughts? Thanks.

yes, the signs must have 'contemporaneous' road marking and vice versa! x

No, no marked bays. The street round the corner has parking meters but this stretch of road has no lines at all and according to my friend (who I was visiting) people park their all the time.

Always protest when you get a parking ticket even if you know your in the wrong, does not cost you anything but you might get off it !

It doesn't need yellow lines if it is a Residents Only area where the residents must display a permit to park on street.

No residents only area, no marked bays, no nothing! I'm sure they'll come up with some reason or other but it's worth a try. Thanks for the replies.

I'm in agreement with the advice to protest - the worst you get is some time to pay, the best is to get off the fine altogether.
