You've got a leak! That's the limit of my knowledge about cars.
Could be a blocked pollen filter but, I thought they manifested themselves in the passenger footwell generally.

Do you or your neighbours own a dog ?

thanks for your very helpful comments
Is it fresh water, or coolant? (you should be able to smell if it's coolant)

its fresh water chuck it appears to be coming in under the door coz when i got in this morning i noticed that the door rim was wet too
It has been raining.

I'd have thought if your windscreen washer level and radiator water level is still up to the mark there is unlikely to be anything of concern.
Has the door seal perished / cracked / come away from the body work? are the windows closed properly? has the car just had a new front / side window? check under the bonnet in the recess below the windscreen, are the drain holes clear? was your door closed fully when you parked it up?
Next time it pours, sit in the car and watch for dribbles.

If no luck, leave pieces of kitchen paper in areas of suspicion, and check later if they give clues to the point of ingress.
I would check the window seal rubber to see it it is split or perished. Yes, I know it's not an old car, but the cheap plastic/rubber that they use now doesn't have the longevity of the older cars. It's quite likely that the water is getting past the rubber seal and running down inside the door and out of the drain hole at the bottom, straight into your footwell

Thanks guys i appreciate all the helpful answers. i think ill have plenty chance to test the door seal in the next few days looking at the weather forecast!
Between the outer drivers side window & the door ( to the right or the door latch) there should be a lenghth of rubber, the one that clears the drivers door of rain / etc going into the door recess, check that also.
