Redex (i think)

Has anyone used that redex stuff you mix with your petrol to clean out your fuel system and does it work

I've used it but since spoken to a mechanic at volkswagen who said that due to the high pressure injectors in modern engines, using a product such as redex is completely unnecessary.

Can also cause problems with HDI engines such as the new peugeots...

A waste of time and money in my opinion.

If your injectors are clogged get them profesionally ultrasoncially cleaned and tested. Other parts, such as the carburettor will, over time, get slightly sticky varnish deposits - stripping down and cleaning is the only way to properly clean.

When I was a car mad teenager I used to use this stuff in my JPS Capri and was well impressed when a load of black dirty looking smoke came out of the exhaust, I thought it must be cleaning out a load of crap from the carb and valves, but of course mainly the smoke was just from the oily rubbish I had just poured into the spark plug holes and carb! More recently I have used the injector cleaner, and have to say I didnt notice a blind bit of difference afterwards. I think that modern petrols are a lot 'cleaner' than older fuels, and contain detergents themselves anyway, so I would think that these products are now a waste of money.

And to follow on from Impret-Sir says about cleaner and better refined Petrol - virtually all cars these days have a pretty thorough fuel filtering system.

Well I hope so. I have a 13 year old Volvo which has 2 fuel filters - �40 for replacing the main one every 50K miles !
