I'm 17 and have just got my provisional. my mums insurance company have told her that they refuse to insure me on any car with an engine more than 1.1l until I am over 19. Is this the case for all insurers?

No that's not the case.  At 17 I was insured under my dads policy on a 1.4.

Try getting quotes on the internet, make sure you shop around, I found diamond the cheapest for my first year of insurance and they also discount for passplus and do a scheme that gets you a year NCD in 10 months...

Got a young drivers insurance for my 17year old from Norwich Union (internet). Also a huge discount because he did "Pass Plus" - more money off than the course cost.
Good luck and safe driving.
Definitely shop around. Internet is a good source but worth buying your local weekly regional Car-Mart magazine and check the Insurance pages - normally towards the back. There are plenty of companies which specialise in Young drivers.

Both my sons and several of their friends found that CIS (the Co-op Insurance Service) were significantly cheaper and had better benefits for young drivers.

Good luck - and don't forget to leave a long thinking gap between you and the car in front!
