What has been the most troublesome car you have ever owned, & in what way?

Yonks ago a Renault 15TS. It was really fast (for me) but I think I had to have about 6 new sets of calipers on it. I have never had (or will have) a French car since.

I haven't got one particular car in mind, but in my early days of motoring for the first couple of years I had heap after heap as that was all I could afford back then. you know the usual culprits at that time Cortina's Capri's and such like, some of them I couldn't even go to work or out anywhere without having spare points, spark plugs and condenser and a can of brake / clutch fluid with me along with a full tool box and socket set. I can tell you I learned a lot about rust and the mechanics of cars from those days.

Like Tony, I have had a load of crappy cars in the past. They were all cheap as I was skint most of the time but probably cost a lot in repairs. Aahh those were the days.....NOT.

Same as tony also, Talbat solera (or something like that) was the first, it was really old when i bought it.

Tony, remember one that I always parked on a hill. Had to jump start it every day. A wee red mini I had couldn't overtake anything faster than a carthorse, foot to the floor and it still didn't do more than 40. Good grief, I'm getting all nostalgic!

I rember a mark 2 escort (German made I think with the square headlights) Trying to push start the damn thing in a torrential downpour in the middle of Belgium !

Used to overheat something awful too

I think everybody made lousy cars in the 70s some sort of international agreement

Talbot Solara, I'm amazed it just didn't fall apart with rust, maggie those old Mini's were great fun weren't they 'not'.

oh god, my Polo... broke down every month. Starter wouldn't work, windows leaked, glovebox fell out, electricity leaked and electrocuted anyone opening the boot, door had to be realigned, new alternators, everything . I got so terrified of getting into it I just sold it for scrap. No VWs ever again.

I think you are right jake. I remember in the 70's that it was very rare to see a car over 2 years old that hadn't got at least one body panel either in primer or a totally different colour usually due to a crap colour match with one of those shake and spray cans or the panel had been taken off one out of the scrap yard ( gawd the many happy hours I have spent scouring scrap yards after parts ).

Tony that's the name ha ha. We used to bodge it with fiberglass stuff to fill in the holes. I had it 3 years toured Wales, England and Scotland with a boot full of bottles of water as it over heated every time it was held up in traffic. We even put a reconditioned engine in it.

arwyn, I bought a manky old Vauxhall Victor once ( because it had got 12 months MOT ) I was doing some work on the front brakes and while doing the brakes I started to have a poke around various things ( gawd I wished I hadn't ) I found that half of the passenger side sill and door bottom had been bodged up with what I can only describe as papier mache and then painted lol.
