..My car insurance expires in four weeks time.I informed them that I would have a new car as of a week on Saturday. They want to charge me £25 administrive fee to change the information and £18 to cancel existing policy.
A total of £43.

Could I take a brand new policy (from another insurer) for the new car from Saturday week and just pay the last (October) payment on the existing one and let it run out. The two policies would overlap by three weeks or so but as they are for different vehicles would that matter. My monthly insurance payment is less than half of £43.

I can't see why there would be a problem with that. Both cars would be insured.
Cannot see why not, just let the new insurer know what your doing just in case.

Your insurer is a bit of a tight wad! When I changed my car mid-term it was done in 5 minutes over the 'phone with no extra charges and in fact they sent me a refund because of the change in insurance class.
Tell them what to do with their Insurance Jan, there are plenty out there looking for your business.
ridiculous change your insurer
If you tell them you are not renewing your insurance because of the fees and will go elsewhere, they may drop the fees to keep you with them?
Hi , i was in the same position only a few months ago, i too was told very similar figures to yourself, the only problem to what you are proposing to do is , you will have to provide proof of your no claims bonus to your new insurer, now this is fine if you have last years renewal notice, but if you are relying on this years renewal letter to get the premium down (for having an extra years no claims bonus, i.e in 4 weeks time) then you cant do what you are wanting to do, as the dates wont match up. what i did was to let my present insurance run out as normal (i had 12 days left to run) get my new car with the free 7 days cover of insurance , what most companies do nowadys. but this gave me the extra year no claims bonus, and no fees to pay anywhere. the only downside to my situation was that my new car was uninsured for 5 days,(it was parked up in my garage) until my new policy was in force, (this isnt allowed nowadys, i know, but it takes a few days for mid to be updated, before they send a letter out to you and this often takes 3 days to get out to you, so wasnt a problem, and to this date ive never received any letter or fine for my car being taxed and uninsured for 5 days of the year.
sounds a bit risky, though, jesy!
lol yes i suppose, but mine was only a few days, and to be honest, i wasnt aware that if your car was taxed then it had to be insured also, so i would of explained that if i got a letter, thankfully i was ok. the insurers are raking a load of extra money just by charging ridiculous amounts for what is really a few sheets of a4 paper reprinted with new details, some charge a tenner, others up to £35 .
i personally wouldnt recommend the op to do this as 4 weeks is probably enough time to flag up on the dvlas/mid computers etc.

Many thanks to all especially jesyca, good advice.I didn't know about the NCB bit.
Most insurers will have no problem waiting for the renewal to arrive to confirm your NCB.
Yes, when I last renewed they gave me 30 days to produce the NCB proof.
