Sea air to blame for failing electrics..?

Hi Guys,

Recently I have been experiencing some problems with the electrics of my vehicle. The first fault was roughly two months ago when my indicators would flash intermittently. A friend who works as a mechanic took a look and swiftly resolved the issue.

A couple of weeks later, the windscreen wipers were behaving in a way that I describe as "stubborn": They'd operate on the incorrect function when prompted and fail to work first time.

Concerned it may be a manufacturing fault I approached the dealership who took time to investigate my motoring woes.

I live in a coastal area and it became apparent that it could be the fault of salt in the sea air that was creeping under the bonnet and into the engine corroding and rusting the wiring.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there any measures I could take to prevent further damage? Would my insurer cover this type of damage?

Excuse my for butting in Tony, is the car a Peugeot by any chance?

To answer your question, your insurer does not cover living by the sea or salt creeping under the bonnet.

just think for a minute, UK roads in the winter are covered with salt (well sometimes) ,which then causes the roads to be drenched
with salt water which gets under the bonnet and the full length of the vehicle when driving....working on your garages theory every car in the UK would have a wiring problem.

Amy, I'm sure your fault lies with the Windscreen/Lights stalk on your car, I am presuming its a Peugeot, If so, you will have probs with the lights coming on without you switching them on, lights stopping on when you remove the Key, if you have these problem & it is the stalk you are looking in the region of £250 to replace ( Just replaced on my wifes car) you can get these off ebay, but be very carefull, some are faulty but if the seller is decent they will state this on the selling post. off ebay they can range from £90>>+.
