I'm buying a used car, a subaru legacy brighten '94, which would cost far too much too insure full so I will only be getting third party. To cover myself i'm wanting to get a good car alarm.

A few people i've talked to said a mongoose 3 star to plenty enough. Is this right? is there much better protection with a 4 or 5 or are they more about offering minor variables?

I dont know the specific features of the alarm you mention, but in general, opt for one that is Thatcham catagory 1 approved and that should do you fine. This will contain an immobiliser that self arms a number of seconds after you leave the car, plus all the usual motion/door opening sensors etc. A catagory1alarm/immobiliser should also get you a discount on your insurance, so shop around and be sure to mention that when you get a quote. I guess you could also get a tracker fitted, which will again get you a reduction in your insurance premium, but there are not cheap, and might be overkill on a legacy. By the way, what is a "brighten"?, Ive never heard of that model.

when u say a good car alarm to cover yourself, what do u mean?

If it is to stop blighters nicking it or at least detering then all power to u, but if u think that it will reduce your insurance that u have to pay then are u sure that u are going to at least get the value of the alarm? what i mean is with an alarm fitted u might get maybe 40- 50 quid knocked off if u are lucky, but how much is the alarm going to cost u to buy? u could end up paying a lot for an alarm and then finding u hardly get a discount whatsoever. might be worth experimenting on car insurance websites that give u a quote online like directline, and try seeing how much with an alarm and how much without and see if the reduction is worth the huge expense of an alarm

Thanks for the answers

i'm in NZ so maybe it's a model that doesn't make it to the UK. It's really just a station wagon type vehicle. When i'm talking about insurance what i mean is that i'm only insuring as third party so the alarm for me is really about giving complete peace of mind it won't be stolen -cause if it is, that's 5 grand gone.

As the subaru is the most stolen vehicle here, + the bracket i'm in, full cover (no 3rd + fire and theft is avaliable) is ridiculous -about 2 grand a year.
