That's due to it being connected to a permanent live, instead of a feed from your ignition.
You can either put up with it and remember to turn it off when you turn the engine off; or you can try and re-wire it, using a feed that's only live when the ignition is on .... good luck :)
Rewire THROUGH ignition.
I'm not sure if I've misread your question now .......
Do you mean it stays switched on when you switch your engine on, but you can manually switch it off .... or do you mean you can't switch the stereo off at all ??

I can switch it off manually
hen rewire through ignition Rhoda.
The snag with wiring it through the ignition is that you can't have it on without the ignition. My Volvo radio is wired to a permanently live connection but times out after 15 mins if the ignition is switched off, or immediately if you open the driver's door. Are you sure there isn't some such circuitry in your car Rhoda?

.... in that case, I stand by my first post :)
You sometimes have two live feeds, one through the ignition to power the radio when you turn on and a second one that is always live to maintain your preset stations otherwise you have to retune every morning
The set needs two feeds for what you need Rhoda, a constant and a switched live.
The two may have been joined behind the set as there was no switched live easily available, depends on the car make and model.

With an old stereo I had, by pressing a combination of buttons I could set it to turn on/off with the ignition or independently of the ignition, check the instructions
I am sure it needs to be wired to ACC (accessory) side of the ignition switch. It should then work if the key is in the ON or ACC position. Then you can if you wish have the radio on whilst parked but will go off when you remove the key.
