I have a strange-looking rectangular warning light with a star in the middle of it.  Goes out as soon as engine fires and there is no obvious problem, but what does this light mean?

I've got a warning light on my Zafira that might be the same. The rectangular shape looks like a radiator and the star is 5 point. On the Zafira it's called the ''electronically controlled engine cooling indicator''. The blurb in my owners manual says ''control indicator lights up when ignition is switched on. goes out shortly after engine starts'', it goes on to say ''if it lights up when engine is running a fault has occurred in the engine cooling syatem or the cooling circuit for the air conditioning. Electronics switch to emergency running programme. driving may be continued. check coolant level'' Hope this helps.

by the sound of it it's an engine management light that's showing the system is working as it should, if it goes out and does not show again while driving then there's no problem. this is a good thing, cos a management fault is tricky and can be expensive to fix especially on a vauxhall...
