I ask this because I'm in the process of getting stock together to open a little boutique selling Retro items. Talking to various different age groups I'm getting the impression 'Retro' is very dependant on your age. Some people think 40's and 50's are Retro (I would class this era as Vintage) some think the Eighties are 'Retro (do me a favour that was only last month wasn't it?) I'm stocking stuff from the early 60's to the late '70's. Is this what you would expect to see? If not what? (I'm off out now but will get back later to discuss answers) Thanks x

Shows how much I know. I'd have taken any design from the past as qualifying as Retro. It'd encompass more tightly labelled eras.
My idea of retro is what you stock Retrochic - 60s & 70s. Maybe it's just an age thing though.
What is more important is that whatever you stock, it sells.
I think it depends on your age. Retro for me is 80's stuff.

not really Old Geezer, I want to keep the Image right so people aren't disappointed when they walk in. I've got some great stuff ready to sell and have heard that Melaware stuff and 1970's clocks are flying off Ebay Now I'm late lol! can't get off this bl**dy site its like Hotel California lol!
My dining room is modelled on a 50s American diner theme and I've had a lot of friends refer to it as "retro" so I just assumed it was anything from that era or perhaps the 50s and 60s.
Why not have different sections? 50/60s - 70/80s...
btw...the teenagers are big into retro at the moment.
I was just about to post exactly what Ummmm has said - if you restrict yourself to a couple of decades then you narrow your customer base too and they may not return to browse.

Also perhaps offer to try and source pieces that people are looking for, form a good relationship with your customers and it should work well.
Here's what I was referring to:-

I loved my 1970's fibre optic lamp........

At my age ummmm, teenagers ARE retro.
Some styles, such as Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, etc have a distinctive look to them although they sometimes blend into each other with subtle additions and subtractions. Whereas, to me anyway, "Retro" indicates a fashion or style that really can't be defined...To me it means stuff from the 50's to the 70's; to someone much younger it might mean stuff from the 70's to the 90's. Good luck...It sounds like an interesting project.
retro = practically everything i own and wear. all bought originally by me. i didn't know i was retro until my g/children told me.
Lol Ron....
And lava lamps.
To me retro are items that were manufactured before I was born, not items that I grew up with and these days see them in museums !!
Retro is a Latin prefix word meaning --backwards, back, the past . I suppose anything from the past could be classed as retro. But I would class 40s/50s as vintage.
