Spare Keys

Is it reasonable for a dealer to sell a car with only one key - i.e. no spare ?

Are you saying that you buy a fob and key with a transponder for the focus and then do as the fella instructs ?

Yes Bazile, the transponder mates up with the immobiliser.

Can you also go to somewhere like Timpson's ( as boxtops mentioned
in post )and get a key cut that will allow you to manually open the car doors / start engine (and in this case the only thing that you would not be able to do is obviously use it remotely?) - is that what is meant
by emmergency key in , methyl's post ?

I know this is going on a bit , but it's adding to the mountain of information that someone can look up in the future on answerbank

Bazile, have a look at this ebay add, the keys that they are selling will lock and unlock the car ( after programing ) but without the chip it won't start the car.

I remember the 'old days' when all you needed was a note of the key number , my 1965 Triumph Herald had key No FS 905 , you just went to the nearest parts dealer and asked for a spare FS 905 or whatever yours was. Not very effective at preventing theft though!

Yep, the good old days EDDIE ( lol ) I had a cortina Mk2 1600E many years ago and I could unlock and start it with the thin end of a teaspoon !.

In about 95 when I locked my keys in my car the police opened it for me. No key was used and no damage was done. He made me turn my back though.

Just wondered, Jeza, it's an old car thieves trick. Used to be able to feed a piece of wire between the window rubber and the glass and lasoo the interior door lock and hey presto your in !.

Probably a loop of packing tape or a strip of steel with a notch cut out.

At one time you could open beemers by cutting a tennis ball in half, putting one half over the lock and hitting it...

After our Capri was broken into the detective told me 'A steel comb would unlock it' and she was right. Fords were notoriously easy to get into

shoota, the half tennis ball trick used to work on Ford Sierra Cosworths as well.
