Hogging The Middle Lane

What's the difference between driving in the middle lane and hogging it.
I, along with dozens of cars to the front and back of me, drive along at 60 - 65, keeping up with the traffic but leaving a good space for breaking, stay in the middle lane. Apparently this is breaking the law??

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.As pixie says - you should always move into the leftmost lane that has appropriate space for you to drive safely in - then move back out again if you need to overtake a slower vehicle.
We could (and people here usually do) argue all day about what is 'appropriate' and what is 'safe'.
No-one disputes that on a completely empty motorway you should be in the left hand lane (unless a BMW driver, in which case your car would die of shame).
No-one disputes that on the M25 in the rush hour you can be in any lane that seems to be making progress.
The problem is 'where is the change-over' point between these two extremes - and we will never agree on that on AB.
We could (and people here usually do) argue all day about what is 'appropriate' and what is 'safe'.
