I bought mine from the DVLA direct and they sent all the relevant documents and instructions with the purchase notice. The process was pretty straight forward. If you go to www.dvla.gov.uk and look on the vehicle links for 'cherished plates' all the destructions are there!
remember the plates advertised by companies may well be available from the DVLA direct and 99% of the time they are cheaper to buy from DVLA than the company because they put a mark up on them. The DVLA site has a great search engine where you can try all different versions of your plate and get an instant price.
got mine from www.privatereg4u.co.uk
yes they take their cut but all the fees are set out. further for another twenty or thirty quid they sorted out everything, MOT, new tax disc etc etc.
Further further when you want your plate made up try www.craigsplates.co.uk very good service.
further X3 when you apply for a new insurance certificate they will try and charge you an admin fee. speak with the supervisor, profess your disgust and you will get it free. I did.
