It strikes me as utterly irrelevant for a prospective BSM driving instructor to be able to calculate the answer to this question.

In what way does mathematical ability equate to driving aptitude? (and don't mention stopping distances... these are memorised not calculated.)

Ah Kempie, that's just what BSM ask to test their prospective Tutor's aptitude!

Stopping distances are calculated. S.D.=x squared over 20 plus x.  where x is mph and S.D. is in feet.  Have a look on google which will show that as well as the formula you also have to factor in today's better grip roads which are 67% (from 30% to 50%) better than when the original stopping distances were calculated in the 60's. (Using a Ford Pop or Anglia, I understand)

Why do Bring Some Money commonly known as BSM ask prospective instructors that question?
A new or trainee instructor would be limited to teaching learners who would not be allowed on the motorway .
More advanced instructors may train Potential Driving Instructors. known as PDI's in motorway use.
Otherwise why bother?
